    Because I only left the house with a 35mm manual focus lens and couldn’t zoom out, I nearly fell off the western edge of the new addition to Arawak Cay trying to get the entire island in the frame.  So many of my photographs come with stories of accidents barely avoided because of mild incompetence on my part.

    Even though I’m not too particular about this photo, I decided to include in on my store for only one reason: this is as close to the island the sun usually gets during the summer months when the earth’s axis tilts the northern hemisphere closer.  I would be more satisfied with the photo if I could get my hands on a more serious lens to bring out the detail in the shadows, but I have to work with the equipment I have.  During the winter months, the sun is far to the left and sets behind the new BahaMar resort.

    To the ordinary viewer, it’s a plain sunset.  To me, I think about the gravity keeping the molecules stuck to one another and stuck to earth.  I think of the nuclear fusion of the sun, fueled by burning hydrogen and the extreme amounts of radiation emitted.  I think about magnetic fields that produce aurorae, and other nerdy things.

    I was able to make this photo after many failed attempts over several days.  I knew the image I had in my mind but the light wasn’t cooperating. Finally on a chilly winter day in February, the sky was cloud free and I was able to complete my vision.
