Description

This was one of the first photographs I ever took with a camera I bought on eBay for parts. Because I knew nothing about the technical aspects of photo editing, I regrettably deleted the raw files, as they took up so much space.  I didn’t understand that having the original camera files would help me later. It was beginner’s luck, really, that I was at the right place at the right time.  Years later, I saw the carriage driver taking another family of visitors on a tour but couldn’t approach him to ask his name because I was afraid of scaring the horse on the busy Nassau street and getting trampled.

The humidity was stifling that day in early May.  My body was tired and my eardrums were sore from all the ambiance of the carnival.  I was experimenting with a cheap lens in poor condition that lacked any redeeming qualities.  Luckily, after walking around a bit in the heat, this opportunity came into frame.

Before the development of The Pointe and Margaritaville, this was the old view from Junkanoo Beach of the western end of the Paradise Island lighthouse. On my way back from taking photos of horse-drawn carriages on Shirley Street, I stopped to rest my legs, set up a tripod and took this shot.
