I take photos of these shells because there was a time when they were so common you could come back with a handful just by going on a shoreline stroll. Today, they are rare and can be seen only in the main public library in downtown Nassau. For years the upstairs section of the library, which used to serve as the first prison, has been closed due to renovations. At some point in the future, I endeavor to get permission to borrow the rarest and photograph them on the beach.

Finally I just decided to record video of Balmoral Island, named after the castle, when I thought the framing might work well for a still.

It was hard to get this photo without the undulations of the sea getting the tip of the lens wet. I was standing on slippery rocks trying to get a clear shot of the sunset. My mother used to say whenever the sun was red like this, it was the dust from the Sahara Desert being blown all the way across the Atlantic. There is some truth to this.

Because I only left the house with a 35mm manual focus lens and couldn’t zoom out, I nearly fell off the western edge of the new addition to Arawak Cay trying to get the entire island in the frame. So many of my photographs come with stories of accidents barely avoided because of mild incompetence on my part.

I spend so much time meditating out here, it doesn’t matter how unruly the wind, the rain or the temperature. A place one can go to think is rare and priceless. Sometimes its a physical place, and for a lucky few, it’s a place in the mind.

Even though I’m not too particular about this photo, I decided to include in on my store for only one reason, this is as close to the island the sun usually gets during the summer months when the earth’s axis tilts the northern hemisphere closer. During the winter months, the sun is far to the left and sets behind the new BahaMar resort.

This island is mesmerizing during golden hour but especially in the hard light of day. It is now privately owned by a major resort. It costs $5000 for an all inclusive day there and $10,000 for an overnight stay.

To the ordinary viewer, it’s a plain sunset. To me, I think about the gravity keeping the molecules stuck to one another and stuck to earth. I think of the nuclear fusion of the sun, fueled by burning hydrogen and the extreme amounts of radiation emitted. I think about magnetic fields that produce aurorae, and other nerdy things.
